  • Dr Sanango provides authentic shamanic healing with Master Plants Ayahuasca and Sanango, as well as other medicinal rainforest plants. We facilitate ayahuasca healing retreats and shamanic dietas at Chinchelejo Lodge, the family home of indigenous ayahuascero Don Eluco Navarro. Chinchelejo Lodge is located in the Amazonian village of Jenaro Herrera on the banks of the Ucayali River, about 200km from the city of Iquitos. Our retreats include ayahuasca ceremonies in natural settings as well as the maloca (ceremony house). In addition we have various communal activities in the surrounding jungle such as fishing, medicinal plant collection and jungle treks. This is not a luxury retreat but an opportunity to experience real Amazonian healing and living with a highly experienced indigenous shamanic healer and his family.

First off, the price listed here, $800, is not accurate. An 8 ayahuasca retreat costs $375 and that includes 5 ceremonies. I did an 8 day master plant isolation diet, which cost $750 (maybe that’s where the $800 comes from).
The location is convenient enough to get to, without being too close to a city. You can reach it by a 2 he bus ride plus 2 he fast boat ride from Iquitos, or a 12 he slow boat ride from Iquitos. Either way is nice and scenic.
From the moment I arrived I was warmly welcomed by Don Luco and his apprentice Emily. I had my own building for the isolation diet, which was not the Ritz, but was more than sufficient for my purposes. It had a simple bed with a foam mattress, a few chairs, a hammock, a couple desks, a bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower, and a few windows. Mosquitoes we’re not an issue outside until it became dark, then they were no worse than my home town of Indianapolis, IN. They were no an issue at all once inside.
Don Luco is warm hearted and readily available. He clearly understands English better than I speak Spanish, but he strongly prefer to converse in Spanish. His apprentice is an excellent translator for those with no Spanish language skills. Don Luco takes participants into the jungle to help.collect the medicine, and is happy to teach you about the plants if your interested.
Uchu Sanango is amazing. I plan to go back yearly to deepen my relationship with it. The ayahuasca there is the strongest I have ever had. One full shot glass was more than enough for me, I actually settled on 3/4th of a shot glass after the first ceremony with a full one. Every other time I drank Aya in other places I needed 2 to 2.5 full shot glasses to get the effect. Don Luco’s brew is a mix of 10 plants, so there is a lot going on with it. The two types of sanango in it really work on opening up the physical and subtle.anatomy of the body. The energy and visions were profound for me each time and my overall experience has changed my life.
Their Maloca is the jungle is magical. It is just steps away from a river you can swim in the morning after ceremonies or the evening before. The sounds of the jungle as the ceremony is winding down are ideal. Don Luco’s icaros are masterfully used.
The food is great. They have decent vegetarian options and delicious fish and occasionally chicken as well. They let you eat salt during ayahuasca retreats, but not during isolation diets.
If you want it, and your heart is humble you will soon be part of Don Luco’s family. This place is IDEAL and I know of no other place with prices this good.

I went on an 8 day retreat (all included, 5 ceremonies) in September 2015. The shaman, Don Luco, is simply wonderful. He is kind, caring, and went above and beyond to help us navigate our new world of ayahuasca. We got to collect medicinal plants from the jungle and then make and bless the ayahuasca all together. Accommodations were comfortable, and the food was good and sustaining for the day. Luco’s icaros were beautiful. Just wow! Every morning and noon we got to swim and clean ourselves in the Ucayali River. It was a powerful and life-changing experience. If you are ready to experience ayahuasca, this is where you should do it. Emily, Luco’s apprentice, is also wonderfully supportive. I highly recommend Dr. Sanango!

      G’day,

This place is great, participated in an 8 day retreat in October 2015 and am planning my return trip…….. !

Ceremonies – plenty, 5 offered on an 8 day retreat.

‘Ayahuasca’ – is made at the centre by you and the shaman, from plants/bark collected by you and the shaman in the jungle.

Location – 12 hour river boat ride into the jungle down the river from Iquitos, in the town of Jenaro.
Lodge/centre is on the edge of the town and jungle. Some noise from friendly townsfolk.
Very easy safe walk into town / wharf.
Couple of small shops with not a lot in them.
A few street food stalls – yum
      Fried chicken shop.
      Internet shop (not on-line everyday).

      Food – plenty, ayahuasca diet.
Filtered drinking water – is provided / delivered in 20ltr bottles.
Electricity – most nights between 6-10pm

      Accommodation – Rustic / Basic
      Flushing toilets
      Showers (cold)
Good mozzie nets. Mossies were not too bad, but you are in the jungle, so expect them.

Swimming – yes, beautiful refreshing swimming hole 400m from centre.

Activities – ample offered eg boat trips and jungle exploration.

Centre facilitator, Emily (English) is very friendly (everyone at the centre is), knowledgeable, caring, supportive and always up for a chat and a laugh :0)

Essential things to take – an Open Mind. mossie repellent (natural), long trousers/pants and shirts for sun and mossie protection. Sun screen.

Tip – In Iquitos, If your not used to tropical climates and busy dirty third world cities, book a hotel / hostel room with A/C.

      The Experience – FANTASTIC !

A friend and I stayed at Dr Sanango in early September 2015, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Everything about the retreat was a fantastic journey, physically and spiritually. Starting on the beautiful launcha journey down a lazy river deep into the amazon (you can get a faster boat but I would recommend the lancha!). This gave us time to really get to know everyone attending the retreat and really get into the zone of what we’re there for. It’s also beautiful lazing in a hammock watching to world go by. The retreat itself is in a fascinating friendly local village deep in the amazon. You have plenty of free time to explore and meet with the locals there. The accommodation is basic, you stay with Luco (the sawesome shaman) and his family, but this actually helps you to get in the correct frame of mind, removing all the ties we constantly have with our busy worlds. It’s clean and has areas to relax or socialise. It’s also a very short walk from a lovely spot to take a dip in the river, just like the locals do! The food is great too and is prepared for you so you can really relax, rather than worrying about a dieta or what’s for dinner! The structure of the retreat is very relaxed, but offers lots of opportunities for group yoga, discussions, explorations or just chillin out in a hammock with a book (amazing collection!)

Emily is great! She’s really understanding and offers up a lot of herself during the retreat, she’s always there for a talk or to just listen. Also during the ceremonies she’s available to come and help you with anything or laugh along with you. She’s also great fun and a lovely person! Thanks for such an awesome time Emily! :)

Luco is an incredible shaman. He’s a great presence and throughout the ceremonies helps to keep you on the path you need! You’re in very VERY experienced hands. It certainly helps you to achieve what you need to and be relaxed knowing that you will have such an great spiritual guide.

I had a fantastic experience and can’t recommend Emily, Luco and Dr Sanango enough! Definitely definitely get in contact with them to discuss your Ayahuasca or Plant Dietas!
