More Info
  • The Hummingbird Ayahuasca Retreat and Healing Center is a shamanic healing center specializing in plant spirit medicines and energetic healing. Located near Iquitos, Peru on 35 acres of beautiful and tranquil rainforest, the center provides an idylic environment for healing and personal transformation.

The Hummingbird Center offers a unique approach to the ayahuasca healing and transformative process that is resulting in excellent outcomes for our clients. With an emphasis on ayahuasca healing, we offer ceremonies led by expert indigenous healers. Manain our shaman has 37 years years of experience with the medicine. Our center provides a safe, supportive environment for people to get the healing and spiritual expansion they seek. We foster an atmosphere of open communication that encourages dialog about the challenges of their past, and the insights and teachings received during ceremony.

The owner has a background with 12 step programs, and knows the magic that can happen when someone feels safe to share the secrets of their heart in a circle of supportive, non-judgemental people. The Hummingbird Center also works with Huachuma, the medicinal cactus of the Andes. We have found ayahuasca and Huachuma to be very complementary. Some individuals have a special affinity for one or the other of the medicines. Occasionally Huachuma will clear blocks in an individual that ayahuasca does not seem to touch. We have seen a number of people who were stuck have significant breakthroughs with san pedro, then move on to have wonderful and productive ceremonies with ayahuasca.

The focus of our work is on healing and personal transformation - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. We spend time with each individual to understand why they came and the outcomes they desire from their work with ayahuasca. This information is shared with our shaman, who works in ceremony to help each person realize their goals. Our circle meetings on the day after ceremony reinforce that work, interpreting and expanding on their experience within the context of their intentions for that ceremony, and their goals for their time at the Hummingbird Center. Our retreats are limited in size, ensuring that everyone gets the personal attention they need and deserve. The Hummingbird Center's approach uses a combination of traditional Amazonian shamanism, Huachuma, lifestyle coaching and compassionate and loving support throughout the healing and transformative process.

The center is an environment of openness, authenticity and emotional safety where one can relax and be themselves. In addition to being a retreat center, the Hummingbird is also our home. Jim is in a apprenticeship to be ayahuasquero, and his wife Gina is a natural healer with an extensive knowledge of plant medicines. We participate in all ceremonies, and after the ceremony spend individual time with each participant, discussing their experience (to the extent they desire), answering questions, and offering guidance so they can better understand the healing process.

    Information about the location:

our location offers a quite, peaceful environment removed from the noise and distractions of modern jungle-town life. The center is an oasis of tranquility, full of the sounds of jungle wildlife such as the screech of hawks, the lively prattle of 15-20 parrots flying overhead, or the gentle whirring of hummingbird wings. Nights are filled with the sounds frogs singing their joy of life, owls trilling for their mates, and the ubiquitos symphony of hundreds of differe nt types of insects. These beautiful jungle night-noises are a wonderful accompaniament to the icaros sung during an ayahuasca ceremony. Occasionally we are visited by large iguanas and monkeys, most frequently seen in the trees across the pond while lounging on the porch in our comfortable rocking chairs.

    Medicine preparation:

The ayahuasca we use is among the best you will find. We proudly serve ayahuasca cooked by Ron Wheelock, the "Gringo Shaman" of Iquitos. After trying the medicine of over 15 different ayahuasqueros, we have found Ron's medicine to be consistently stronger, easier to drink, and offering a 'sweeter' journey than any others. Nobody drinks this medicine and says it was not strong enough. Instead, people frequently state it was the strongest medicine they have ever had, and often request a smaller dose their second or third ceremony. Ron apprenticed with Don Agustin Rivas Vasquez and Don Jose Coral Mori, the teacher of Pablo Amaringo and Eduardo Luna, and has been a practicing ayahuasquero in Iquitos for over 13 years. He is the only gringo ayahuasquero in the Iquitos area that works alone, without the assistance of his teacher.

More about the accomodation and food:

Accommodation is in traditional palm leaf thatched huts called tambos or in out new guest house overlooking the lake. Most people on the 12 Day Retreats will sleep in the new guest house. Those on Personal Healing Retreats will typically be on a dieta to facilitate their healing, and so have the option of a tambo, either private or with 2 rooms. If the tambos are available, you can always choose to sleep in one of those if you desire, at no extra charge. In the event there are more people wanting a tambo than are available, we will base our decision of their use based on our determination of who would best benefit from the extra quiet and isolation. All our rooms and tambos are clean with a high quality comfortable mattress and a mosquito net over the bed (although mosquitoes are rarely a problem here). Rooms have a lamp, shelves for your clothes and personal items, a strong box to secure your valuables, and nothing else. Please bring your own lock for the strong box. The common area upstairs in the big house has a table with chairs you can use for writing. This is authentic rainforest accommodation, used for centuries by indigenous people. There are no gadgets, TVs, internet or other "mod cons" to get in the way of your experience, so you can let go of the outside world and focus on your healing. Additionally, tambos have their own private toilet, along with a table, chair, and a hammock on their porch. All meals are included in the retreats and the food served in our dining room is fresh, wholesome and fully in keeping with the ayahuasca diet. Meals are mostly vegetarian, but we occasionaly serve fish or chicken. We will happily cater to those on vegan or vegetarian diets.

I spent 14 days at the Hummingbird Center (on a personal retreat) back in November 2013! The place is absolutely beautiful and the people are very friendly. The food is the best I’ve ever had – they have a professional cook at the center! The place is clean and the gardens around the area are tended by the workers 24/7!
The Ayahuasca ceremonies were an absolutely mind-blowing experience! The Shaman seems very powerful, and has many years of experience with the medicine! His Icaros was really beautiful and very helpful during the ceremonies. The San Pedro was my favorite medicine though. It was an indescribable personal adventure – did some very deep healing!
The safety on the other hand was not what I expected (though I’ve been told it’s now a lot better). A friend lost $1500 from his tambo and others lost personal items.
